How to Pick Your First HYROX Division: The Ultimate Guide
Don't let registration anxiety hold you back. Learn the difference between Open, Pro, and Doubles to find the perfect fit for your first HYROX race.

Deciding to sign up for your first HYROX is an exhilarating milestone. But as you navigate the registration page, you’re faced with a critical choice: Open, Pro, or Doubles?
At Fit 4 Life Club, we see many athletes underestimate the technicality of the movements or overestimate their engine on their first go. Picking the right division ensures that your first race is a "fun" challenge rather than a four-hour grind. This guide will break down the weights, standards, and performance benchmarks to help you choose the best fit for your current fitness level.
Understanding the HYROX Format
Before picking a division, remember that the race structure is identical for everyone: a 1km run, followed by one functional workout station, repeated eight times. The only variables are the weights used and the intensity of the competition.
The eight stations are:
- 1000m SkiErg
- 50m Sled Push
- 50m Sled Pull
- 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
- 1000m Row
- 200m Farmers Carry
- 100m Sandbag Lunges
- 75 or 100 Wall Balls
The HYROX Open: The Perfect Starting Point
For 90% of first-timers at HYROX Port Coquitlam, the Open Division is the recommended choice. It is designed to be accessible to the "everyday athlete" while still being incredibly challenging.
The weights in the Open division are manageable for most people who have some experience with functional fitness or CrossFit-style training.
- Sled Push: 102kg (Women) / 152kg (Men)
- Sled Pull: 78kg (Women) / 103kg (Men)
- Wall Balls: 4kg (Women) / 6kg (Men)
Pick this division if: You can run 5km in under 30 minutes and have experience with basic functional movements. Your goal should be to experience the atmosphere and finish with a smile.
The HYROX Pro: For the Seasoned Competitor
The Pro Division is a significant step up. Not only are the weights heavier, but the volume of work increases on the final station (100 Wall Balls instead of 75 for men).
- Sled Push: 152kg (Women) / 202kg (Men)
- Sandbag Lunges: 20kg (Women) / 30kg (Men)
- Wall Balls: 6kg (Women) / 9kg (Men)
Pick this division if: You are an experienced functional athlete. We typically recommend the Pro division only if you can comfortably complete the Open weights at a high intensity or if you have a strong background in powerlifting or high-level CrossFit. If you struggle to move a 152kg sled, the Pro division will be a long day at the office.
The HYROX Doubles: Race with a Partner
If the idea of tackling the 8km of running and all the stations alone feels daunting, Doubles is the answer. In this division, both partners run the 1km together (side-by-side), but you split the work at the stations however you like.
Pick this division if:
- You want to share the experience with a friend or partner.
- You are strong at running but struggle with heavy weights (or vice versa).
- You want to "test the waters" before committing to a solo race.
Benchmarks: Are You Ready?
To help our members at Fit 4 Life Club decide, we use a few simple benchmarks. If you can meet these criteria, you are ready for the Open Division:
- Running: Can you run 10km without stopping?
- Strength: Can you deadlift your body weight for 5 reps?
- Endurance: Can you maintain a 2:15/500m pace on the rower for 10 minutes?
- Skill: Can you perform 20 unbroken Wall Balls at the prescribed weight?
A Note on "Compromised Running"
The biggest mistake beginners make is judging their readiness based on "fresh" gym stats. In HYROX, you never do a sled push or lunges with fresh legs—you do them after several kilometers of running. When choosing your division, always "under-promise and over-deliver" on your strength. It is better to crush the Open division and feel fast than to struggle through the Pro division with poor form.
How to Test Your Level
The best way to decide is to simulate a "Mini-HYROX" at the gym. Try this simple test at Fit 4 Life:
- Run 1km (Level 1-2 effort)
- 50m Sled Push (Open Weight)
- Run 1km
- 20 Sandbag Lunges (Open Weight)
- Run 1km
- 25 Wall Balls
If your heart rate stays manageable and your form remains crisp, the Open division is likely your home. If you feel like you could do that three times over without slowing down, consider the Pro.
